Filter Media Types¶
| Media type | Typical use | Efficiency-class anchor | Evidence | Data status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| needle-punched | HVAC pre-filtration, ceiling filter rolls | F5 / MERV 5 (example) | manufacturer catalog record | catalog-confirmed |
| synthetic fiber | HVAC panel / pocket, high-temperature primary | M5–F9 | manufacturer catalog record | catalog-confirmed |
| micro glass fiber | HEPA/ULPA high-efficiency | H13/H14/U15 | manufacturer catalog record | catalog-confirmed |
| activated carbon | odour / chemical-vapour removal | — | manufacturer catalog record | catalog-confirmed |
| PP/PVDF/PTFE membrane | liquid filtration | filtration μm | manufacturer catalog record | verified |
| sintered mesh | liquid / high-temperature filtration | 1–100 μm | manufacturer catalog record | verified |
Key Differences¶
- Needle-punched vs synthetic fiber: needle-punched is a non-woven felt structure with high dust capacity for coarse filtration; synthetic fiber offers higher strength and service life for medium panel and pocket duty.
- Micro glass vs synthetic fiber: micro glass reaches HEPA/ULPA efficiency but needs a separator structure (separator / mini-pleat); synthetic fiber is stronger but tops out lower in efficiency.
- Activated carbon: adsorbs gas-phase contaminants, does not replace particulate filtration, and is normally combined with a particulate stage.
- Membrane vs metal cartridge: membrane (PP/PVDF/PTFE) suits chemically demanding liquids; metal (SS304/SS316L/Ti) suits high-temperature / high-pressure / cleanable-regenerable duty.
Field Notes¶
- Grammage and efficiency curves are given per grade and application; a roll is specified by grade and the target particle size.
- The efficiency curve for the target particle size is the figure that confirms performance.
